TRANSLATION OF DRAMA THE BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFÉ, EDWARD ALBEE/ CARSON MCCULLERS INTERPRETATION, TRANSLATION, ANALYSIS

The first and until now last translation of the drama The Ballad of the Sad Café which was written by Edward Albee based on the novella by Carson McCullers was published 51 years ago. This fact leads us to the assumption that the translation is already outdated. In this thesis we deliver a new translation and by comparing and contrasting the two texts we draw conclusions on aging of translations, elements that cause aging of translations and ways how current theatre-makers handle an outdated text nowadays. The first part of the thesis consists of the drama's literary analysis. The following translation analysis represents a preparatory phase for the translation itself. We also provide a theoretical background on repeated translation, aging of translation and translation of dramatic texts. The new translation of the play is compared and contrasted in the last part in which we cover the most important issues described in the translation analysis. We conclude by comparing our findings with the staging of the play from 2005 in which the earlier translation was used. Czech translations of historical novel by Leo Tolstoy: War and Peace

The thesis is focused on comparison of selected Czech translations of the novel by Russian writer Leo Tolstoy War and Peace. It is based on an extensive selected material to identify a degree and a quality of the overall approximation of the selected Czech translation to the original text of the novel, especially respecting the aesthetic values of the work, its lexical - semantic, syntactic and stylistic plane. The thesis assesses furthermore the adequacy of the translated texts relatively needs of their readers or pragmatic aspect. The conclusion summarizes the results of analysis, which lead to deepening our knowledge of these issues and their usage in the practice of translation. The Annex contents the interview with Mr. L. Dvorak who is the last translator of the novel. The translation of theatre plays focusing on school theatre groups. A commented translation of the drama collection Los árboles dormidos by David Llorente

This work consists of three parts: the translation theory of drama and the specifics of school theatre, the translation of a play by David Llorente, Los árboles dormidos, and a commentary discussing the translation. The theoretical part focuses on problems and characteristics of translations of this genre. The commentary to the translation includes a translation analysis, a discussion of the translation problems and their solutions, and a typology of translation shifts.
